As rents in Berlin continue to rise, growing families are motivated to reorganise their living spaces, rather than relocating. This becomes especially relevant when children become pre-teens and require individual bedrooms, but the apartment’s original layout has just two.
The project addresses this common challenge by creating two new bedrooms within the existing living room, which has only one window and one radiator.
Key questions around ensuring natural light and ventilation, while accommodating essential furniture are resolved in the design of a simple elevated wooded structure inspired by Japanese teahouses.
The resulting structure contains two symmetrical bedrooms that share both an entrance area and the room's window space. The construction uses straightforward details and can be easily disassembled, allowing for the possibility to reuse the materials.
