The new entranceway of a house in Kleinmachnow, Berlin, is a 2 m² extension designed to provide a more representative access to a 1930s home. This small addition also offers space for shoes and jackets indoors, as well as seating opportunities outside. The design seeks orientation toward the large garden by curving its right side. In order to integrate it with the existing building, the extension follows the pattern and materiality of the house’s original brick plinth. The entrance level flooring is formed by two concrete elements.
The new roof is constructed with steel beams that are partially anchored to the house walls and is supported by two slender columns, one of which also functions as drainage for its green roof.
It additionally covers the entrance to the Keller (basement), which is located beneath the entrance and is accessible via a side stair. The green roof was designed using sedum ground cover and plants suited for partial shade.
Originally, the area to the left of the entrance functioned as a winter garden, meaning its walls are thinner than those of the rest of the house, which resulted in the rooms in this area experiencing mold issues. To intervene, the entire façade of the former winter garden received new thermal insulation and horizontal wooden lattice cladding, which also serves to highlight the entrance façade from the moment one enters the property.
