INFOSProject: REFURBISHMENT OF A PRIVATE APARTMENT
Completion date: 01/2025
Location: BERLIN, Germany
Architect: Paola Bagna
Area: 83 m2
CREDITSPhotographer: Stefan Wolf Lucks

The renovation of an Altbau apartment in Berlin for an artist family of three, reconfigures the apartment’s existing layout to improve spatial relationships.
Originally, oversized rectangular bedrooms opened directly onto the living space.
The footprint of these rooms has been reduced and reshaped to more compact, square proportions. The resulting hallway creates a buffer between the living area and the bedrooms, enhancing both acoustic and visual privacy and accommodating additional storage. Natural light is introduced into this space through full-width clerestory glazing positioned at the upper level of the bedroom wall.
The kitchen, living, and dining areas are unified into a single, open-plan space. The bathroom is designed as a compact volume that is accessed from the bedroom zone, creating privacy from the entrance and living areas. The curved outer wall of the bathroom defines a cosy seating area within the living space.
Despite its limited size, the bathroom receives natural light via high-level openings in the wall it shares with the adjacent living room. The bathroom radiator is integrated into a drywall niche to maximise the full width of this compact space.
Materiality is restrained and consistent throughout. Light grey linoleum flooring amplifies brightness across the apartment. Cabinetry and kitchen elements are executed in plywood. The bathroom is finished with simple glossy kit-kat wall tiles and a terrazzo tiled floor.
Partially self-built, the project engaged the clients in selected construction works. Conceived as a home for both living and making, the apartment creates a space where family life, artistic production, and art appreciation come together and merge.
